Most people view residential addiction treatment as the worst possible thing that could happen to themselves and their family – and for good reason! There’s a lot of doubt, uncertainty, fear, and pain when someone struggles with drugs or alcohol to the point of needing professional help.
It’s understandable that those who need treatment view it as the end of their life and their loved ones view it as the end of their family. Thankfully, this isn’t the case at all.
Seeking help from an inpatient substance abuse treatment center is one of the hardest things most people will ever do, but it’s also one of the most rewarding. It’s an unequalled opportunity for reflection, growth, and healing.
In other words – inpatient treatment gives people their life and family back. It isn’t easy, but recovering from addiction is as simple as picking up the phone and asking for help. In fact, it’s exactly that simple.
That’s where we – the experts at Malvern Institute – step in. We’re the oldest private inpatient alcohol rehab center in the country. We’re been helping people recover since 1948.
We have close to 70 years experience successfully healing addiction in a Pennsylvania inpatient drug and alcohol treatment setting.

Pennsylvania Residential Substance Abuse Treatment
Everything we do at Malvern is focused on giving our patients the best treatment experience possible. To that end, we strongly believe in taking 90 days to offer comprehensive healing of the mind, body, and spirit.
We’re talking about our 90-day model of clinical care, the first section of which is spent in our inpatient drug rehab center.
These three weeks are a time of personal and familial growth, of education, counseling, coaching, and recovery support. They’re filled with individualized groups and specialized one-on-one therapy.
Malvern’s Core Treatment Program consists of primary groups, track groups, and an educational recovery series that meets five times a week.
What exactly does our residential drug rehab center address? Well, our clinical services include:
- A comprehensive, customized, and continually updated treatment plan.
- Our patients receives a primary therapist during the detox phase of treatment. During residential, they meet individually with their therapist twice each week.
- Our patients participate daily in three small groups: one Core Curriculum group, one Premier Program group, and one Individualized Track group.
- In addition to one-on-one therapy and small groups, we offer patients a minimum of two family sessions and a full range of family education programs.
- When patients are close to completing treatment, we provide unique discharge planning and a full continuum of care in the form of PHP, IOP, GOP, and aftercare and alumni programs.
Our unrivaled level of clinical care also includes support services like back-to-work conferences and individual family meetings. Patients and their families receive evidence-based care that promotes lifelong recovery.
Not only do we address the many repercussions addiction brings, but we identify, explore, and address why people turn to chemicals in the first place. We offer a holistic picture of recovery – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, individual, and familial.
To put it another way, Malvern’s inpatient drug treatment center is one-of-a-kind.
A Clinical Day at Our Inpatient Drug Addiction Treatment Center
Since opening our doors in 1948, we’ve believed in evidence-based care above all else. In the 67 years between then and now, we’re learned a thing or two about what works best for our patients.
We apply this knowledge during our day-to-day residential drug treatment center timetable. Each of our patients works with their primary therapist as they move through the following schedule:
- 7:30am – Wake Up
- 7:50 to 8:20am – Breakfast
- 8:30am – Community Meeting
- 9:15am to 4:50pm – Group Therapy, Core Curriculum, Premier Programs, Group Lectures, and Specialty Workshops (with a break at 11:30am for lunch)
- 4:50 to 5:20pm – Dinner
- 5:30 to 9:30pm – Orientation Meeting, Gender-Specific Groups, 12-Step Meetings, and Reflections Meeting
- 9:30pm – Snacks and Downtime
- 11:00pm – Lights Out
Breaks are designated throughout the day
Malvern’s Premier Addiction Treatment Programs
Continuing our passion for evidence-based care, we offer a number of premier residential alcohol rehab programs. These are offered Monday through Friday and facilitated by our team of primary therapists.
All of our premier programs are offered with one goal in mind – providing our patients with an unrivaled treatment experience and helping them achieve long-term recovery.
Specific service programs include:
Relapse Prevention Program
Malvern’s clinical team developed the Relapse Prevention Program for those who have already completed the core curriculum or struggled with chronic relapse.
This is a small and intimate program – and an integral part of the inpatient alcohol treatment center model – which provides our patients with simple and actionable strategies to minimize the chance of relapse.
Mental Health Program
Our Co-Occurring Program focuses on the importance of treating mental health and addiction as interrelated issues. When a disorder is identified in one of our patients, their treatment team may request an evaluation and diagnosis as part of treatment.
Our patients have the option to engage in one-on-one, personalized sessions with their psychiatrist, primary therapist, or other patients facing similar challenges.
Chronic Pain Program
We see many patients who are suffering from chronic pain issues due to back, neck, or spinal injuries, or medical conditions like fibromyalgia. These conditions can lead to substance abuse and dependence.
Our Chronic Pain Program was developed to teach patients alternatives to medications for pain management. The program is facilitated by a specialist trained in managing pain without the use of medications.
High-Risk Patient Program
Patients identified by their therapist as needing more than the Core Treatment Program are enrolled in the High-Risk Program. This track enables our patients to remove obstacles preventing full engagement in residential substance abuse treatment and helps them get the most from their time at Malvern.
This specialized program helps patients who struggle with intense cravings, significant depression or anxiety, poor impulse control, a desire to leave treatment prematurely, and other challenges.
Grief, Trauma & Loss Program
Grief is a natural reaction to some life situations. For those who have experienced the loss of a loved one, another significant loss, or abuse, a referral to this group may be indicated.
This small and intimate program is facilitated by clinicians with specialized training in grief and trauma and allows for healthy, productive interactions.
Study after study has shown that treatment is most effective when it occurs in a gender-specific setting. That’s something we take to heart at Malvern and just one more example of our evidence-based clinical care.
We offer single gender groups for men and women. Examples of typical men’s inpatient addiction treatment groups include anger management and healthy emotional exploration. Examples of typical women’s inpatient addiction treatment groups include codependency and assertiveness training.
Just like gender-specific groups offer patients a more inclusive and successful inpatient experience, so does age-specific treatment.
We offer age-specific groups for our younger, older, and middle-of-the-road patients. These groups focus on challenges, struggles, and solutions unique to each age group and better prepare our patients for lifelong recovery.
While this isn’t a specific track or program that Malvern offers, we believe the 12-Steps offer patients an incredibly holistic form of recovery. Not only do they promote long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol, but they allow the mind, body, and spirit to heal.
Keeping that in mind, we provide AA, NA, CA, and other 12-step fellowship meetings 7 days a week at both of our Pennsylvania inpatient drug rehab centers.
