Drug overdose deaths increased 37% across Pennsylvania last year

The opioid epidemic continues to take its toll on the United States, leading to another sharp increase in the number of deaths due to drug overdose in Pennsylvania.

The Drug Enforcement Administration announced 4,642 fatal drug overdoses were recorded in 2016, according to philly.com. The figure represents a 37 percent rise from the previous year.

More than a third of the recorded deaths – 1,608 in total – happened in the southeastern section of the state: 907 in Philadelphia, 230 in Montgomery County, 206 in Delaware County, 168 in Bucks County, and 97 in Chester County. All of those counties saw increases from 2015.

Via the report:

“At 4,642, the total number of fatal overdoses in Pennsylvania was nearly four times the number of fatal traffic accidents. Prescription or illicit opioids such as heroin were implicated in 85 percent of the drug fatalities, according to the DEA.”
